Lets start with the ride. Our E550 rides on steel springs and has electronically adjustable dampers that can be switched between comfort and sport settings via a button on center stack. It's like driving two completely different cars!
Next, the 5.5-liter V-8. It's a lusty performer, punching this sedan to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds and across the quarter mile in 13.3 seconds with a gently muted NASCAR rumble. The seven-speed transmission allows the engine to loaf along at freeway speeds -- it's turning just 1550 rpm at 60 mph in top -- making 21-22mpg highway cruising a cinch.
All of that performance tech is complemented by a considerable amount of cabin tech. The Bluetooth phone system includes dial-by-name voice command and the navigation system automatically avoids traffic jams. The premium Harmon Kardon sound system is audiophile quality.
